What a slab leak is, and why it's different
A slab leak is a water supply line leaking underneath the concrete slab foundation of your home. It matters as its own category because both finding it and fixing it are different from a leak in a wall. The pipe is encased in or run beneath concrete, so you cannot see it, cannot easily reach it, and cannot just cut a hole and splice it. That is why slab leaks get their own detection methods and their own repair choices.
They are also easy to miss until they are expensive, because the water goes down and out rather than up and visible. A slab leak can run for a long time as rising bills and damp floors before anyone connects the dots. The most distinctive sign is a warm spot on the floor. When the leaking line is a hot-water pipe, and hot lines tend to fail first, the escaping hot water warms the concrete above it, creating a patch of floor that is noticeably warmer than the area around it. The others are quieter. The sound of running water when everything is off. A water bill that climbed with no change in use. Flooring that is damp, buckling or cracked in one area. A drop in water pressure. Even a faint musty smell as moisture builds under the floor. Any one of these can have another cause, but together, especially with a warm spot, they point down at the slab.
