First, understand what is failing
The sewer lateral is the private line carrying waste from your house to the city main under the street. And it lets the plumber see and verify the entire new line directly. The cost is the surface: lawn, a section of driveway, or landscaping over the line has to be restored afterward.
Trenchless saves your yard, but it is not automatically cheaper. The honest comparison is total cost including restoring whatever sits over the line.
What trenchless can and can't do
Trenchless methods, mainly pipe bursting and lining, replace or reline the lateral with minimal digging, usually just a small access pit at each end. Pipe bursting pulls a new pipe through the path of the old one while breaking the old pipe outward. Lining installs a new pipe wall inside the existing pipe. Both avoid a full trench, which is their headline advantage.
They shine in specific situations: when the line runs under a driveway, a patio, mature trees, or hardscape you would rather not tear up and rebuild. But they are not universal. A fully collapsed line may have no path to work with, and some layouts are not suited to it. Trenchless is a tool for the right conditions, not automatically the better choice, and a plumber who pushes it for every job regardless of the line is not being straight with you.

A good plumber runs both numbers for your specific line: what the dig costs plus restoring what is over it, versus what trenchless costs for your layout. Then the choice is clear on the merits rather than on a blanket claim that one method is always better.
The Arvada-specific factors
A few things about Arvada tilt the decision. The older neighborhoods, Olde Town and the pre-1970 core, have the clay-tile and cast-iron laterals most likely to need this work, often under established trees whose roots caused the failure in the first place. Those mature trees are exactly the case where trenchless earns its premium, because trenching would mean cutting through or around root systems and the landscaping they anchor.
The expansive clay also matters. Because the ground moves, a plumber should look at why the line failed, not just fix the break. If soil movement separated a joint, addressing drainage around the line is part of a lasting fix. And on a line that has already moved once, the durability of the method matters, because the ground will keep moving under whatever gets installed.
Roots, and why cabling is not a fix
One more decision comes up constantly on older Arvada laterals: roots. When roots intrude, a cabling with a root-cutting head clears them and restores flow, and that is a legitimate emergency step. But it does not fix the crack or open joint that let the roots in, so they grow back, usually within a year or two. Annual root cutting is treating a symptom.
This is where the camera pays off again. If roots are entering at one joint on otherwise sound pipe, a spot repair ends the cycle. If they are entering in several places, the line is failing along its length and replacement, dig or trenchless, is the honest recommendation. Paying to cut roots every spring is almost always more expensive over time than fixing the line once.
